Montessori School of Northern Virginia
Our Story
MSNV was founded in 1962 by a small group of parents inspired by the Montessori philosophy and the work of Nancy McCormick Rambusch, a leader in reintroducing Montessori education to the United States. What began as a parent cooperative serving just 14 children became the first Montessori school in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In its early years, the school operated out of shared community spaces—from church basements to local halls—shaped as much by family involvement as by educational vision. Parents worked alongside teachers to sustain and grow the school, creating a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility that continues today.
As interest in Montessori education grew, MSNV expanded to serve elementary students and eventually established a permanent campus in 1968. Over the decades, the school continued to evolve—adding programs, campuses, and new experiences for students.
The opening of the Sleepy Hollow campus in 2022 marked another important milestone, expanding MSNV’s reach in the community and creating opportunities and spaces for learning for students and its families.
Today, MSNV continues to grow and thrive, guiding children from the early days of toddlerhood through middle school. Each campus supports the unique needs of its learners, yet the heart of the school remains unchanged: a community built on care, collaboration, and a deep belief in the power of purposeful education.
Our Mission
At MSNV, our mission is simple and deeply intentional: we inspire and guide children to love learning, to love one another, and to love the world around them.
Students are encouraged to explore their interests, ask meaningful questions, and discover the joy of understanding how things work. Learning is not rushed or standardized, but shaped by curiosity and purpose.
Just as important, children grow within a warm and inclusive community where respect, cooperation, and care for others are practiced every day. Relationships between students, teachers, and families form the foundation of the school experience.
Through daily experiences in nature and environmental stewardship, students develop a genuine connection to the world around them. They learn not only about the environment, but how to care for it—building habits of responsibility that last well beyond the classroom.
